Athlone Canal is located within the northern boundary of the River Shannon Callows Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and the Middle Shannon Callows Special Protection Area (SPA). An Appropriate Assessment and Natura Impact Statement have been prepared and will be submitted to the Planning Authority with the application.
