Proposal description
Extend the existing extraction area at Ballyadams Quarry (Section 261 Quarry Registration Number: QY05/27), Athy, Co. Laois. The application area, which is entirely within Roadstone’s Landholding, will cover an area of 5.1 hectares (‘ha’), with a centre point at Ordnance Survey Ireland Grid Reference ITM X 662249 Y 691456 and is within the Townland of Ballyadams, Co. Laois. The proposed development will consist of an extension to the existing extraction area of Ballyadams Quarry into agricultural land to the south of the existing quarry footprint, and will seek to extract rock from a series of industry-standard benches, each 15metres (‘m’) high, to a final level of 55m above ordnance datum (‘mOD’). The proposed development will seek to extract circa (‘ca.’) 905,000m3 of aggregates throughout its lifetime. Rock extraction will be carried out by industry standard drilling and blasting, followed by additional processing through mobile crushing and screening. The proposed development will provide for an increased extraction area of ca. 2.1ha, while the remaining land within the application area will facilitate the boundary development in the form of landscaped berms, native woodland, haulage ramp, security fences, access routes and safety buffers. The Proposed Development will utilise the existing infrastructure at Ballyadams Quarry. The Proposed Development does not seek an increase to existing traffic or production volumes at Ballyadams Quarry but rather seeks access to quality aggregates within the Landholding. The proposed development will be subject to a restoration plan, which aligns with the existing permitted restoration plan for Ballyadams Quarry, and includes a waterbody, native woodland, with quarry faces retained to provide suitable habitat for nesting birds. A planning permission of 20 years is being sought for the Proposed Development. An Environmental Impact Assessment Report (‘EIAR’) will be submitted to the Planning Authority as part of the application. The planning application and/or EIAR may be inspected, or purchased at a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making a copy, at the offices of the Planning Authority (Áras an Chontae, James Fintan Lalor Avenue, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, R32 EHP9) during its public opening hours of 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday.
