Why this application matters

Cable connection

A circa 705m underground 220kV cable is proposed along Pigeon House Road, linking the Shellybanks public car park area with the permitted Poolbeg 220kV substation.

Wider grid project

The cable includes a joint bay for a future connection to the Carrickmines-to-Poolbeg cable replacement project. Its other onshore and offshore sections are intended to proceed through separate consent processes.

Environmental assessment

A Natura Impact Statement accompanies the project and considers potential in-combination effects with the other elements of the wider replacement scheme.

Proposal description
We Eirgrid plc with the consent and approval of Electricity Supply Board (ESB) intend to apply for permission for development at this site at Pigeon House Road, Dublin 4 on lands between Shellybanks (Also referred to as Shelleybanks) public car park and the permitted 220kV Poolbeg substation DCC Reg Ref 4057/23. The development will consist of the provision of a c. 705m underground cable operating at 220kV along Pigeon House Road and all associated development including excavation and reinstatement of the road surface. An underground joint bay will also be provided to allow for future connection to the wider Carrickmines to Poolbeg cable replacement project. A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) will be submitted to the Planning Authority with the planning application. Other elements of the Carrickmines to Poolbeg replacement project, including an onshore section from Carrickmines 220kV Substation to Blackrock Park and offshore section from Blackrock Park to Shellybanks, will be subject to their own AA Screenings and, where required, an NIS, to support separate future applications for development consent to the relevant consenting authorities. Notwithstanding this, the potential for in-combination effects arising from these other elements have been considered in the NIS.
