Proposal description

The conservation and extension of protected structures, construction of new buildings and demolition of disused structures, within a comprehensive redevelopment of the entire site which contains protected structures Ref. PS 071 and measures 1.13 hectares gross area. The proposal includes for a)Enclosure of undercroft colonnade of the former Douglas Street Primary School to provide Reception, Toilets, Office and Shop; Demolition of 2 no. toilet block extensions to fomer Douglas Street School at the proposed main entrance of the site and re-instatement of facade exposed by demolition. b)Change of use of part of the northern central convent building and part the former Douglas Street Primary School building from school to Archive facility with new stairs /lift access provided with two apartments over c)Change of use of Goldie's Chapel (1865) to provide a Hertage Centre with new single storey entrance and new roof glazing to the existing church courtyard.d) Conservation, repair and alterations to existing southern central convent buildings retaining existing Ministry and Residential uses. New stairs/lift extension to be provided from Evergreen Street courtyard. e)Removal of two storey corridor linking two convent buildings to permit a pedestrian route/spine running East-West. f)Alterations and extension to existing graveyard and re-location of tomb of Nano Nagle. g)Construction of single storey garden cafe (with service yard)within the gardens to eastern boundary. h) Development of Western Apex of site to provide a building for third level educational use fronting onto Evergreen Street, Abbey Street and Douglas Street, ranging in height from two storeys to four storeys, incorporating car and bicycle parking with access from Abbey Street.This will extend into the upper floors of the former Douglas Street Primary i) Eastern hard standing to be used as car park with modified access from Nicholas Street. j) External works associated with universal access provision by means of construction of new circulation spine through the site served by lifts, staircases and bridges and the creation of linked courtyards including one partly covered. k) New gate to existing vehicular and pedestrian entrances at Evergreen Street. l) Removal of railings for relocation within the site and boundary wall to front of former Primary to provide open space. m) New Pedestrian access from Abbey Street. n)New drainage and associated site and landscaping works and all ancillary site works.
